The MMofra Foundation began its literacy fundraising program at the Pan African Festival in Accra, Ghana with products designed by Pentewa staff.

The Mmofra Foundation of Ghana was founded in memory of one of Ghana's foremost playwrights, Efua Sutherland. Efua Sutherland took the folktales and traditions of Ghana and used them as her starting point to create plays that spoke to the everyday lives of Ghanaian people.

Efua Sutherland was also a passionate advocate for the children of West Africa and her entire life was spent working for their education. It is this work that the Mmofra Foundation continues with its literacy campaign.

It was fitting that the Mmofra Foundation introduced a new fund-raising effort at the Panafest in August 1997. The Panafest was founded by Efua Sutherland to bring people from the African diaspora together. T-shirts designed by Clare Conrad and by Pentewa Interactive staff, Jackie Robinson and Susan Olivier-Hirasawa, were sold by The Mmofra Foundation to raise money for books and toys for the children of Ghana.

In 2000, Pentewa collaborated with the Mmofra Foundation in the design of "Tahinta! A Rhythm Play for Children" a book and audio cassette project written by Efua Sutherland and published in Ghana.

"I  have written the old tales in new ways to teach the children that their history is rich and noble."
