"What a joy to hear Wilson describe his work on the Rock Art Project. It pulled such enthusiasm and creativity from him...."
John Platt, Parent and Educator
In this project we made a petroglyph that appeared to have been carved from "desert varnish".
Desert varnish is a dark layer of minerals that builds up on rocks in desert climates. Petroglyphs were created by scraping away the layer to reveal the lighter rock beneath.
Petroglyph Tablet Materials 1. Self drying clay
2. Rolling pin & board
3. Knife
4. Dark tempura paint
5. Sticks or sharp stones
2. Paint the dried tablet with a dark colored tempera paint and allow it to dry thoroughly.
1. Roll out the clay. Then trim the edges of the clay into a shape you like.
Let the clay dry.
3. Use a sharp rock or a stick to carve or 'peck' out a design.
