"The craft projects were all interesting and everyone's  turned out great!"
Mariko, age 12

Native Americans used a variety of natural materials to make the paint used to create multi-colored pictographs. In this project we made a clay tablet and then painted a pictograph.

Clay Tablet Materials
1. Self drying clay
2. Rolling pin & board
3. Knife
4. Tempera or acrylic paints
5. Paint brushes

1. Roll out the clay.
2. Trim the edges of the clay into a shape you like.
3. Let the clay dry.

4. What would you like to paint on your tablet? Remember pictographs that you have seen during your journeys.
5. Beginning with the outline, paint your tablet.
The colors most often used in pictographs are black, white, ocher and red.
